In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the messenger owls represent the herald(s). The owls are the ones to give Harry all of the letters of him being accepted to Hogwarts. Even though Harry's relatives prevent him from reading the letters, they are still announcing that the hero is going to be going on a new journey into the special world of magic.
