The reward is the next stage. Once the hero has survived death and overcome their greatest fear, he earns the reward he was after.  The reward could be anything from a magical weapon/item, knowledge, or reconciliation. The reward may have to be stolen if it is not directly given to the hero. The hero may now have the time to celebrate, rest, and recover.
